How does the body break down sugar?

How is (refined) sugar digested? “The pancreas has to work extra hard to manufacture insulin (the blood sugar-balancing hormone), and whatever energy the body can't use gets stored as fat, resulting in unhealthy weight gain and even insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes.” (1) “All carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars. I made it through the holidays!

I am so proud of myself.  I made it through the holidays without gaining weight or fat.  I am still down 15lbs and down 7% of my total body fat.  I made sure to only eat one plate of food at each holiday venue but splurged in that I allowed myself to have a little bit of everything…as long as it fit on the one plate!  It worked.  Now I am back on my hum-drum diet of oat meal, eggs, rice, fish, hamburger, chicken, v-8, New Whey, protein shakes, and all things Muscle-Tech!  Wish me luck.
